Critical / Serious Illness Cover

Understand financial support after a serious diagnosis.

Critical illness cover can pay a lump sum if you meet the policy’s definition of a covered condition. That money may help with household costs, treatment or changes to your home, but a diagnosis alone does not always qualify for a payment.

Covered conditions, severity requirements and exclusions differ. Some serious illness policies use a different structure, with payments linked to severity or more than one possible claim. We’ll explain the particular policy rather than treating all illness cover as the same.

Look beyond the name of the illness

The claim definition

A policy specifies the conditions it covers and the definition each claim must meet. Some diagnoses or less severe stages may not qualify. Read any survival-period requirements and exclusions alongside the headline list of illnesses.

The payment structure

Critical illness cover commonly pays a lump sum after a qualifying claim. Other arrangements may offer partial or multiple payments. Check whether a payment reduces remaining cover or brings the policy to an end.

The cover you already have

Life cover, employer benefits and income protection have different purposes. A policy may combine life and critical illness benefits, but that does not necessarily mean it pays both benefits in full or leaves the same cover after a claim.

Think about what the payment would need to do

A lump sum may give you choices at a difficult time, such as reducing debt or paying for practical help. Consider the costs your household could face and the savings or benefits already available. This cover is not a promise that every illness or period away from work will result in a payment.

Compare the actual definitions, exclusions and benefit limits as well as the premium. Answer the application questions accurately and check any terms the insurer applies to your circumstances. If ongoing earnings are the main concern, income protection answers a different question: it may replace part of your income when illness or injury prevents you working, subject to its own conditions.

How protection advice works

  1. Understand your needs

We’ll discuss your circumstances, existing cover and budget, including the people or commitments you want the insurance to support.

  2. Explain the recommendation

We’ll explain the recommended policy, its premiums, benefits and important limitations, so you can consider what it would and would not cover.

  3. Check the final terms

If you choose to proceed, the insurer assesses the application. Check the terms offered and the confirmed start date before relying on cover.

Getting started

Does being unable to work guarantee a claim?

No. Critical illness cover depends on meeting a covered condition’s definition, not simply on being off work. Income protection uses a different claim test. The two may be considered together, but neither should be assumed to cover every health-related financial difficulty.

Can I arrange it without life insurance?

Standalone and combined arrangements exist. With combined cover, a claim can affect the amount or availability of the remaining life benefit. Check how the specific policy works before comparing prices or deciding that an existing policy can be replaced.

Are existing medical conditions covered?

It depends on the insurer and the information assessed. A condition may affect the premium, lead to an exclusion or mean cover is not offered. Be accurate when answering questions and check the final terms; a general description cannot confirm an individual claim or acceptance.

Cover, exclusions and claim conditions vary. Keep up the required premiums to maintain your cover.
